Techie Biker :) gets GPS on his Qwest HTC PPC 6800 - Mogul handset

Lets get to the steps :)

The HTC PPC 6800 has a gpsONE Chip - embedded with the Qualcomm MSM 7500 chipset (Now I wonder - why I did not get this idea when I had the Kyocera 7135). The only problem with this Chip is that it is not autonomously enabled - and even if it is it requires and intermediary driver to activate and work - which unfortunately has to be loaded by a program designed to handle the same.

This is where BAF's gps toggler, or GPS test comes handy.

The QuickGPS gets its positioning info from http://www.rxnetworks.ca/ - but it is not quite useful unless the positioning of satelites are to be stored for a quicker fix
Details of functioning can be read from http://www.rxnetworks.ca/Technology/GPStreamSUPL/tabid/79/Default.aspx but let me warn you - on a CDMA chipset things are at little different - You have the MS Stack taking precedence.

Assumptions :
1. I guess you have the Phones SPC if not , Sprint handset owners follow this link to get it and Qwest phone users get from this link
2. You have a registry editor on the phone.

Step 1:
Connect phone with Qpst, Read phone entering SPC.
Go to gpsOne tab

Ensure that the tab looks like shown here :D

Step 2 :
Open the registry editor on your device :
Use Resco or PHM or any Registry editor... or the best CregCreator which lets you tweak your phone's registry entries from your desktop PC.

You can run this cab file
or
The following entries are to be changed

The above steps are to enable the gps to work in an autonomous / standalone mode. While also updating Quick GPS to connect to a server configured for india. The region is also marked to India.

3. On the device go to start > Settings > Connections > External GPS it needs to look like :

the settings have to be as follows

Then go to Phone Settings in Start > Settings > Personal

Choose Location Settings in Services

Change to On

Your HTC MOGUL is now ready for the GPS Experience. You are free to use any GPS application - there are many depending on the kind of usage you expect. Anyway I'll add a spoiler here .. with a few utilities too :D

GPS is on "COM Port 4" and can be connected with any speed above 4800 but I would recommend to keep it at 4800 itself.

Tips : The GPS tweaks are already done so that you have a minimal battery consumption - but at the rate here on a 2D or 3D fix (P) your battery can be chewed clean from a full charge within 8 hours with GPS !

If you have an unlimited data plan like Rs. 1500/- plan (arun are you reading) then you can use google maps which works quite fast. Else most metro and major cities you can use VOICE NAViGATION using Mapking. A trial can be downloaded from here
google around - you'll get a crack as well :) - Educational purposes jazz :D

Some other tools :
GPS Tuner
Efficasoft GPS Utilities

GPS Test is a great tool to use gps on - this tool gets a fix as fast as a frog can catch a fly - manytimes :D

What to do if the GPS still does not seem to function
I'm using Hetals ROM with BAF GPS Toggle on. Turn that on, then Run GPS Test.
Once GPS Test gets a fix. Run any other application - it always works. Once baf froze, then a soft reset helped.

video of the entire process coming up :) - just confirm if the same is needed - or is the process clear in itself ?

cheers
karki

PS : Offline Google Maps Coming up shortly - statewise.

Bombaybikers Atop Slopes O' hell

"Deadly"
What does the word mean?

It all started with Kamal suggesting a ride to Khamshet sometime back, the idea caught on with bombaybikers deciding on an official ride to Khamset on Sat 22nd and 23rd March 2008. Two days that'll remain etched in our memories for eternity. Two days where man and Machine had the kind of endurance tests which people who missed the ride cannot even fantasize.

For starters, lets answer how do u climb a 70° + incline on a bike? A trek that would tire spiderman easily :)

Add to it the fact that there were bikers crashing right in front of you - and you've halted your bike so that the fallen and sliding down bike does not crash into yours. To start the bike you need to press the clutch - which means you're releasing the bike's lock on the slope - and you are already in a backward fall :D.

Cliff on one side and a guaranteed crash anyway .. a 70° + slope upward incline - and mind you ... there ain't a road - so you gotta be making way thro STONES!!! Read on...

*********************
Pre Ride Incidents :
*********************

18th March 2008:
Kamal, Simi, Sodhiji, Champ, Rohit, Gauresh, Ashish, Uday and Me met up at The Grand Hyatt to decide on some rules to be followed - had informed everyone about the fact that the ride is going to have a lot of off roading :)

19th March 2008:
Pasted a rules and regulations post on bombaybikers.com where it was met with a lot of uncertinity.

20th March 2008:
SMS was sent to all members of Bombaybikers about the ride :

"Bombaybikers ride to Kamshet, 110 kms from Mumbai on 22nd March (Sat).
Meeting point : Center One Parking, Vashi
Time 7 Am
Includes overnight camping"

18. Kamal and Simi (Pillion) - Standard 350 RE joined us after MTDC on Hussain's Bike.

So that is 22 People and 18 bikes.

After barely sleeping for about 3 hours i was up - had a Red Bull, my standard energizer and was up and bubbly by 6:15 when I got a call from Hussain, who had already reached Center One. It took me a little while to get up for some action. By 7:05 I was at the location, met the gang ... and clicked some intro photos - there were a few new members as well !

7:35 - We left from Center One, and via palm beach road rode to Panvel (Dutta Vada Pav) - I was allowed to race ahead of the Lead - Rohit, to click photos. The sweep for most part of the ride was Uday on his trusty unicorn, and Ashish on his Std Bull, which was newly painted and titled as Tribal Bull !

Had an excellent fare of tasty food and refreshments at Dutta Vada Paav, the food here is heavenly.

8:40 -

After the ceremonial honking in bip-bip bip-bip-bip the anthem of bikers here, we startd off on a no halt ride to MTDC resort in Karla - except a small catch up before Lonavala ghats...
The weather too was friendly to us ... there was mild drizzle and a cool air blowing all thro the way - a relief from the normal March Summer Sun.

The MTDC resort had a lot of offer us - but being the wild junglees we decided to enjoy in the pools rather than doing anything else.. The bikes touched MTDC aroud 10:30 and we did a few laps of the ceremonial welcome circle ride - all the bikes and the bikers were in the best of their shapes untill now - no crashes - nothing :D

Strip - Jump into the pool !!!!
We enjoyed quite a bit in the wave pool, and the slides ... Rohit even lost a ball ;). The same was substituted pretty soon with our new lightweight find - Gauresh...well almost - we had him flying between us. Had some snacks at the pool and left from MTDC to do some Tummy Offerings - for which we landed at Amber Dhaba - waking up the entire village side ... Thanks to 17 odd bikes honking and rattling everything that makes a noise !

Halted long enough , playing with the pets, the doggy, the camels, the emu's etc and ordered food to feast an army - only to appear astonished on seeing the bill - a whopping 6 grands ! Thats when we found a few extra table orders added to our bill - maybe they were charging us for playing with their pets too .. ;) .
Kamal caught up with us somewhere here, Hussain had dropped his pulsar for Kamal and Simi since the Black Raven had fallen seriously ill, and was hospitalized at lonavala.

The ride out to Karla Caves was kind of kewl, but nothing like the slopes of HELL ! We reached the foothills - where the roads end, but decided against trekking uphill to see the caves as most of us were too full after the filling meal. We started the return journey unceremoniously. Umeshji did a small off track stunt on the return journey and landed flat when his CBZ decided not to friendly to any mistakes ... (might I add ... drinking and riding don't go too well ... does it ?)

We had decided to do a non-stop to the destination - tower hill ... why do you call it a destination??? Because that is where it is .. it is your final location, your destiny ... On we rode till the foothills of the mountain - strict instructions were given as to the rules of the ride onwards ... At least one bike distance between riders. No Overtaking, etc. For this part of the ride I had priyanka sitting with me.. and I led ahead ... Half way thro, Rustom and Ujjwal, took lead ... At the foothills, of the mighty slope, we paused - thanks to crash land by Ujjwal right in front of me.

Shouted to Priyanka to jump off the bike, and slammed my brake, keeping the bike in first gear. One hell of a brave chic, jumped right off .. .and was up there helping Ujjwal, which I could not assist in, coz of my bike's precarious position and my broken knee... Keeping my weight on the handle, pushed the bike forward for a second, pressing the clutch - and started my bike again - a herculean task - the bike was a lover of gravity, and not really in my support at this point ... anyway went ahead of Ujjwal's crash site, but since I had no momentum in the first place my bike too was grounded - even the superman gear (1st Gear, full throttle, release hold half clutch) was not giving any results.

I'm sure Bajaj never thought there existed tracks like this where nuts like me would trek with their bikes :) hehe

By this time Rustom had managed to take his caliber a little further, but then when all else failed, he turned back downhill with his baby. I was on the slope, Priyanka had trekked it uphill... Rohit, Sodhiji and Gauresh were halted at the base of the dirt slope.

The dirt slope just has stones all around, big and small... the incline is about 70deg and the worst part is your tyre does not get any grip.. so if you dont have a proper riding shoe - you're in for a good surprise - especially if you halt.

Umeshji found it the rough way with his CBZ tumbling downhill, for a while... and then followed by Dineshji on his thunderbird..

Sodhiji in the meanwhile called it quits, considering it to be a tad bit too dangerous... while I had bent my knee again - was sitting powerlessly on the track for about 20 mins Sweating so hard my goggles were dripping... Rohit decided to trottle uphill and was up without a squirm ... followed quickly by Prasad on this Avenger 200.

After a quick bout of Hanuman Chalisa, I started medusa, and with a small push from Rohit and Kunal ... I was up - flying uphill... few seconds later I experienced what is called Heaven - AKA Nirvana :)

Bright sunlight on the right - it was the setting sun. The BSNL Tower right in front of me another Avenger parked right there ... Rohits bike was further uphill. Priyanka and Rustom were already here along with Champ... The highway was a flowing river far away ... The clouds waving from the same height that we were at - and the feeling of making it right to the top - that is a feeling very few can experience - especially on a bike that is not designed for something like this. I bent down and kissed her warm and hard ... right on the headlamps - she's been with me thro misery and joy .. tough and tiring times - never once did she ditch me - Just love her for what she's been to me.

While waiting for the others I spotted Simi who trekked uphill, along with sudarshan and all.. Kamal had managed to ride uphill - so had Hussain - so that was another Bajaj bike uphill :). Kamal & Hussain made a few trips up and down to get all the luggage up while Priyanka, Rustom, Me and Champ rested on our bikes..

At about the same time, the other members decided to camp at the base of the foothill - Which I personally was not in the opinion to do ... coz the destination was the tower hill ... so on I went atop the location and spent some quality time hanging around my bike... Took a few photos here and there and clicked the team's pic while they were waiting for us :)

Slowly we saw one by one - everyone trekking uphill... now starts the real dhamaal !!!

******
CAMP
******

Food and water are alien substances at this height - and we poor mortals needed both - so off shot two rides ... Kamal and Rohit to get the food - the fare included about 45 roti's and some veg handi - along with the packed chicken handi we got from the afternoon order :).

Gauresh had set up his tent out of thin plastic, with a sheet below as well - Tied to Gauresh's and My Bike. Once done, he along with Priyanka and team set up a camp fire - collecting firewood and kerosene to burn the wood. The elders in the group including the nadkarni brothers and Sodhiji were sitting with their "daaru - chakna", Champ made a peg from which i took a sip - just for the Bon-Homie stature.
Gauresh had thermo packed two cans of beer which he shared very caringly. Sharik had gone to sleep near the luggage about 100 - 250 meters away - with simi persuading him to get into the group :).

The sight is still etched fresh in my inner eye... the violet black skyline all around, the shilloutte of a radio tower, the small building housing the equippment, a burning camp fire, with people all around singing all songs possible - with nick drumming on his double congo (bongo)... Everyone was having a blast.

I met up with the locals manning the tower Mr. Sawant Patil and Bhimaji Walunch, they were telling me that the whole tower and everything around was constructed about 40 years ago - and all the equippment was MANUALLY Transferred from the base of the foothill as vehicles do not make it up the slope !!!!!!!!! The let me indoors to click a few snaps inside the base station - I landed out with the others and called up Kamal, who told me that they were at the foothills and wanted someone to get them a torch - two volunteers ran down and within no time we had food and quite a lot of it :).

While everyone seated around the campfire, Rohit set up his ColeMan's Tent - an amazing camping accessory, has a waterproof roof, a door, windows, etc... It was a bloody carryon home!

Everyone had finished gulping down the food, when we realized the distant rumble ... and flashes all around us ... We were there ... Right in the middle of a thunderstorm !!!!

Heavy rain started, but couple of people had obtained permission for us to camp indoors - inside the base tower rooms from the locals, who readily obliged - thanks to them. A few of us ... Babloo, Hussain, Me, Gauresh etc had crowded into Gauresh's makeshift tent as soon as the rain started - but we too ran indoors soon.

All of a sudden we realized that Rohit was out there sleeping in his tent alone - I volunteered to enjoy nature's fury for a while and jogged out to give him company ... with just a small light to guide the way. Inside the tent it was chilly and quite enjoyable - we could hear the patter of the water on the roof, and watch it slide over the sides whenever there was a bit of moonlight.

All was silent until morn ... woke up lazily and gazed at the flowing highway far away from the window in the tent - man .. it was amazing ! Asked a few members about the time to start the departing journey - the reply was standard - all are sleeping still yaar. Later i learnt that the Nadkarni brothers and Ujjwal had left in the morning to escape the heat of the day...

I heard a shout from Kamal and Simi saying everyone had left and then we got out of the tent, packed it over - clicked a few snaps and a small video featuring the last of the riders to leave - the first ones to arrive ... Rohit, Gauresh, Me and Babloo. :) Unpacking took about 15 - 20 mins and we were on the downward journey.

Gauresh who had decided to give his guardian angels the slip while on the upward slope, lacked their support downhill and went down crashing. I admire the man for what he is ... a 500 cc Bullet Standard on a man half the size of a thin tree. At times when I look at his feet, i stop and wonder the resemblence they have with the main stand of a bike.

Anyway ... help was soon on the way and riders ran up hill to help him down... They got him downhill, while I and then Rohit waited for the track to clear.

Gauresh had some minor injuries on his legs.

Slowly rode further, but had a slight tilt when my knee started to ache again... but Prasad immediately caught my bike for a second and steadied me ... thanks to him ... I was downhill in no time - all the while being captured on camera by Babloo. Then shot down Rohit.

I was told that the gang waiting was angry coz we were delaying everyone - but the fact remains that no one had informed the departure time - and above all - whatever was discussed was vague - "everyone is sleeping" et all.... Blurted it out to someone who was trying to reprimand me - might have been offensive then - but hey its all a part of the game.

Thats when I heard the wonderous thudding thumps of resonance - there were a group of bullets headed our way ... Roadshakers - The people who first found this place - man ... would you call them a group ??? It was a strict - RIDE UP and RIDE DOWN ride... The guys had done ladakh last year - and according to them even roads towards Khardungla (the worlds highest motorable road) are not this steep nor dangerous ! - That indeed is an achievement - at least for the six who made it uphill on the steeds...

All of us started the downslope ride with Simi and Priyanka deciding to walk the smooth way back... Ashish had gone off track for a second, but I got down and steadied him immediately... Smoooth ... all of us jubliant BIKERS landed at the village and headed over to eat something from the same hotel from where had got the khana for the night.

Rustom tried my bike, while I tried Rohit's bike - and then for the onward journey, I had simi riding my bike till lonavala, while to took over Rustom's Caliber 115...

Other than a halt for neera water, where we learnt of another crash by gauresh - injuring his hand.. we rode non-stop to panvel - lemondaes and body coolants, the customary hugs and pats - had all the bikers headed their own way.

All in all ... One of the most adventurous, most challenging and enjoyable rides! One where we had tests from every side - Nature to dirt tracks.. Decisions taken at the Spur of the moment etc.. If you were not there for this ride - let me tell you something - you've missed something you might not get a chance to do ever again..

Siging off
Cheers
karki
